My Awesome Runabout Walking Cart

I tested out the cart that I will be setting out with to L.A. Sunday and it’s amazing. Roger Berg at Berg Design made me this awesome Runabout frame and it is better than I ever could have dreamed. She has solid tires and amazing wheels so I never have to worry about replacing tires or tubes. It rolls at the slightest touch even with 60 lbs of weight on it and it took off on its own in the wind along the boardwalk. If you need a stroller contact Roger! He made mine in a few days and was super friendly and helpful.

I walked her down to coney island and back a couple days ago, 22 and some odd miles and it wasn’t hard at all. I have to average 20 miles a day and I started at 9:30 – 10 am and got home around 4:40 pm. On the road I think I’ll be starting closer to 7 am and ending closer to 7 pm. DSC_0579-2

It was incredibly windy though. The birds loved it.

But the sail-like nature of my cart means I had to fight the wind on the way back. The cart supports a wooden base I attached using electrical conduit straps around the tube frame, and screws through the front portion of the cart which is sheet metal. It seems very very sturdy. On top of the wooden base I have added a rubbermaid container and the front of the cart holds my tenba camera bag. This balances the load well between the small bag full of metal camera gear in front over the wheel that weighs around 20lbs and the rubbermaid container which contains 20lbs of water, food, and light camping gear I put towards the very back in order to prevent wheelies.

I’ve also hung a pack with a camel back on the handle bars, a small bottle, and I velcro strapped my emergency radio to the frame for entertainment and safety. Of course there is also the magic arm and super clamp, and the tripod strapped on top of all the gear.

She’s gonna take me 28 miles the first day.. Hopefully she’ll hold up through that and another 2900 or so. Hopefully I hold up! Even though she rolls amazingly getting past the Appalachians and The Rockies will still require me to push the weight.

The cart seems to work wonderfully. I sure hope it holds up through 3000 miles! Bon Voyage, mon fils!

Will the top of the plastic tub collect water in the rain?

perhaps, but not much considering it will be jostling. I have a tarp for heavy rain that can cover the whole cart as well.
