Today I left Columbus after spending a day off washing clothes, watching True Blood and eating as much as possible. When I got out of bed this morning my feet didn’t immediately ache when they were forced to hold my weight and my thighs weren’t sore at all. The day off paid off.
This morning I exited Columbus and passed a former Union training camp/p.o.w. camp and the small cramped graveyard that holds over 2000 confederate soldiers. Then I joined the Ohio to Erie Trail.
Leaving the city gave me the chance to appreciate how amazingly flat the land is. It makes travel very easy, especially when the Ohio to Erie trail, so far, has been entirely paved. The Ohio to Erie trail was heavily traveled by cyclists, couples walking and families. It runs from Cincinnati to Cleveland.
The flatness of the land does challenge my previous method of motivation, forcing myself to the next hill crest, around the next bend, or on to the horizon. Now the horizon seems incredibly far away and its hard to comprehend how much distance I covered. It makes the travel seem slower even though I know it is easier and faster than the hilly terrain of the past 20 days. You can see below that I barely made an elevation change today, but I can’t really complain about that!
Thanks to the London Fire Department for allowing me to set up camp behind their station tonight.

Take every easy day you can get!
Here in St. Louis we have a place called CROWN CANDY KITCHEN. http://crowncandykitchen.net/ I know you like shakes and tonight you mentioned eating as much as possible. Crown Candy has a “Heart Stopping BLT” that’s made with two pounds of bacon. Not kidding. They are also the oldest soda fountain in STL. AND they make their own chocolate candies. The only downside is that I assume you will be coming across the pedestrian CHAIN OF ROCKS bridge and you will be pretty far north of center downtown…
